Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Bio Joe’s different from other landscapers?

We’re owned by a biologist with a degree in ecology and evolution. Every decision — from soil amendments to plant selection — is based on science, not guesswork. We run 100% electric equipment and use only organic products.

What does “ecological landscaping” actually mean?

We manage your property as a living system. Instead of treating symptoms (yellow grass, bare patches), we address root causes — usually compacted soil, depleted biology, or plants not suited to Denver’s climate. We build healthy soil, select the right plants, and let nature do the heavy lifting.

Do you use any chemicals or pesticides?

No. We use only organic amendments: compost, worm castings, biochar, mycorrhizal inoculants, kelp meal, and similar products. Everything is pet-safe and child-safe.

Services & Pricing

How much does a consultation cost?

Free. We walk your property, assess soil and plant health, discuss your goals, and recommend the right service. Free soil testing included for a limited time.

What areas do you serve?

Denver metro within ~15 miles of 80212: Highlands, Berkeley, Sloan Lake, Jefferson Park, Edgewater, Wheat Ridge, Arvada, Lakewood, and Westminster.

What’s the difference between Maintain, Restore, and Regenerate?

Maintain: Electric mowing, edging, trimming, seasonal cleanup. Restore: Everything in Maintain + aeration, overseeding, amendments, and soil testing. Regenerate: Everything in Restore + professional soil analysis, shrub care, winterization, and seasonal design guidance. See our Programs page for full details.

Do you install irrigation systems?

No — irrigation installation requires a plumbing license in Colorado. We can help plan water-efficient landscapes and advise on watering schedules.

Why does my lawn look yellow even though I water it?

Most likely iron chlorosis. Denver’s alkaline clay soils lock up iron, making it unavailable to plants even when present. The fix is targeted amendments and a soil test to confirm what’s happening — not more water or generic fertilizer.

What is a soil food web?

The community of organisms in your soil — bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, earthworms — that decompose organic matter, cycle nutrients, build structure, and suppress disease. A healthy soil food web is the foundation of a healthy landscape, and it’s what our organic approach is designed to support.

Can I install sod on my commercial property?

Under Colorado’s SB24-005, sod installation is only permitted on residential private property. Commercial properties, institutional sites, and HOA common areas are restricted. We can help residential homeowners with sod selection and installation — we work with Denver-area suppliers for KBG, tall fescue, and other species suited to your site.

Why all-electric equipment?

Zero emissions, significantly quieter, and no exhaust fumes on your property. Colorado is moving toward restricting gas equipment for commercial operators — we’re already compliant.

Is electric equipment as powerful as gas?

Yes. EGO’s commercial line delivers equivalent cutting power with instant torque, consistent performance, and lower noise. No difference in results.
