What hot, bare ground costs you

Hot soil is thirsty soil

Heat and drought travel together. The hotter bare ground gets, the faster it hands its water back to the air, so it dries out sooner and needs watering more often.2 Cooler, covered soil holds its moisture longer.

On the Front Range, where summers are hot and water is precious, that is not a small thing. Covering the ground is one of the cheapest ways to stretch every gallon you put down.4

Bare soil doesn’t just bake. It breaks down.

A hot, bare surface is a fragile one. When rain finally hits exposed soil, the impact packs the surface into a crust that sheds water instead of soaking it in, so you get runoff and erosion where you wanted a drink for your plants.5

Dry, bare ground blows away in the wind, and the Front Range has plenty of wind. Every patch of bare dirt is soil life with no roof and topsoil with no anchor.5

The comfort zone

Your soil has a comfort zone

The life in healthy soil, the microbes that break down organic matter and hand nutrients to your plants, works fastest in a fairly narrow band, roughly 68 to 104°F.1 Inside that band, soil biology hums. Push past it and activity falls off.3

On this 95°F afternoon, the soil under living ground cover sat at 80°F, right in the sweet spot.3 The bare soil a few feet away read 117°F, well over the top of that range. Same yard, same sun. One soil was working. The other was shut down.

113°: the growth ceiling

Plants can’t take the heat either

Plants have a heat ceiling too. Above about 113°F (45°C), active growth stops, roots included, and sustained heat past that line starts to kill tissue.2 Bare soil at 117°F is over that line. The covered soil at 80°F is right where roots and soil life do their best work.3 That is the difference between a plant coasting through summer and one fighting to stay alive.

What we do about it

Cover isn’t decoration. It is how soil stays cool, holds water, and keeps working for you.

The fix is simple, and it is the core of how we work: cover the ground and keep it alive. Organic mulch to insulate the surface and feed the soil as it breaks down.4 Living ground cover and densely planted, water-wise natives to shade the soil, hold moisture, and give roots and microbes a stable home.
